This project provides specific, practical guidance about trauma-informed practice to hospital-based and hospital-linked violence intervention programs to better address violence intervention in diverse communities.
Purpose:
- Implement trauma-informed practice as a standard to hospital-based and hospital-linked violence intervention programs
- Improve the effectiveness of health-care based violence intervention by connecting providers in a variety of settings around trauma-informed practice
Population Addressed: Programs providing violence intervention in health care settings and community organizations, particularly those programs addressing the needs of young black men.
Rationale and Relevance:
- Violence disproportionately affects urban youth of color, particularly boys and men.
- Many injured youth have a history of early childhood adversity in addition to the physical and psychological trauma of their acute injuries.
- Diverse communities often lack access to culturally appropriate
trauma informed care and assessment tools, and robust linkages between hospitals, social servicesand community systems - Trauma-informed evaluation and case management are critical to improving the physical and emotional health of these young people and preventing retaliation and reenactment.
