On Thursday, February 10, 2022, at 2:00-3:30pm HST/1:00-2:30pm SST/7:00-8:30pm EST/Friday, February 11, 2022, at 9:00-10:30am PWT/10:00-11:30am ChST/11:00am-12:30pm PONT/12:00-1:30pm MHT, this event was held to increase the access to and visibility of community-based organizations in Hawai’i and the Pacific Islands.
The SAMHSA Office of Behavioral Health Equity (OBHE) invited partners to join the NNED Hawai’i and Pacific Islands Diversity Inclusion Project Showcase (HI PI-DIPS). Hosted by SAMHSA OBHE and the NNED National Facilitation Center (NFC), this event brought together NNED community-based organizations (CBOs) from Hawai’i and the Pacific Islands; Hawai’i, Pacific Island, and regional leaders; and philanthropic organizations.
This event was modeled from HHS Region 1’s Behavioral Health Matters Diversity Inclusion Project Showcase event that occurred in February 2021 and the NNED’s first DIPS Showcase that was help in August 2021.
Highlights from this event included the need to recognize that practices, interventions, strategies, and programming developed in the U.S. mainland may not be applicable to diverse cultural groups such as indigenous communities in the Pacific Islands. A major theme noted from the Pacific Island participants is that there are significant difficulties in behavioral health workforce recruitment and retention. Additional themes of concern included transportation, access (supplies, education, trainings), and substance use.
MISSION
Create a space to cultivate strong partnerships for equitable and healthier communities.
GOAL
Provide diverse NNED CBOs an opportunity to present their focus, population, purpose, and community impact to regional behavioral health leadership.
PURPOSE
Cultivate partnerships between NNED CBOs and state and regional leaders and philanthropic organizations.
We Invited
- NNED Hawai’i and Pacific Island CBOs to showcase their business and behavioral health services to potential funding partners, access training and technical assistance, and gain exposure to behavioral health leaders and philanthropic organizations.
- Hawai’i, Pacific Island, and regional leadership to discover creative ways to engage diverse CBOs, match programs to people, and gain access to a database to ease outreach.
- Philanthropy to explore CBOs that might benefit from their behavioral health equity initiatives.

This page provides a historical record of the first NNED Diversity Inclusion Project Showcase, including the recording, CBOs who presented from across the country, slides, and a summary around what is challenging, what is working, and what is needed.
Over the past several years, behavioral health providers and education systems have recognized the value of the National CLAS Standards in advancing behavioral health equity. To advance this effort, SAMHSA collaborated with the Office of Minority Health to develop this Behavioral Health Guide which underscores the ways in which the National CLAS Standards can improve access to behavioral health care, promote quality behavioral health programs and practice, and ultimately reduce persistent disparities in mental health and substance use treatment for underserved minority communities.
