Addressing Re-experiencing & Avoidance in Victims of Urban Trauma

This webinar begun where webinar #1 left off by addressing PTSD symptoms of re-experiencing and avoidance. The presenters reviewed the learning objectives and discussed these symptom clusters, addressing their physiological origins, and presenting cases of young urban clients and how they experience these symptoms. The presenters also discussed how these symptoms impact on the risk of future violent injury. The webinar then moved to assessment of re-experiencing and avoidance and how providers who recognize these symptoms can intervene effectively in a trauma-informed manner. The webinar was held on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM ET.

Presenters:

Theodore Corbin, M.D., M.P.P.  |  Co-Director, Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice

Ted Corbin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Drexel University College of Medicine. He also serves as the Medical Director of the “Healing Hurt People” Program, an emergency department-based trauma-informed intervention strategy that identifies victims of intentional injury. In 2006 Dr. Corbin was recognized by the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of the “Forty Under Forty” for his work in youth violence.

John A. Rich, MD, MPH  |  Professor and Chair of Health Management and Policy, Drexel University School of Public Health

John A. Rich has been a leader in the field of public health, and his work has focused on serving one of the nation’s most ignored and underserved populations—African-American men in urban settings. Prior to Drexel University, Rich served as the medical director of the Boston Public Health Commission. As a primary care doctor at Boston Medical Center, Rich created the Young Men’s Health Clinic and initiated the Boston HealthCREW, a program to train inner city young men to become peer health educators who focus on the health of men and boys in their communities. His recently published book about urban violence Wrong Place, Wrong Time: Trauma and Violence in the Lives of Young Black Men has drawn critical acclaim.
