Presentation Objectives:
- Highlight the objectives, key findings, and scientific themes of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s (NASEM) report, “Ending Unequal Treatment: Strategies to Achieve Equitable Health Care and Optimal Health for All.” This 2024 report was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
- Explore the report’s recommendations to address racial and ethnic disparities in health care and advance health equity.
- Discuss the implications of the report’s findings for NIH institutes and centers’ research areas and explore how the insights can guide future research that addresses diseases, disorders, and conditions.
The seminar features NASEM committee members instrumental in authoring the 2024 report, several directors and experts from NIH institutes, and AHRQ, discussing its key findings and recommendations.
“Ending Unequal Treatment: Strategies to Achieve Equitable Health Care and Optimal Health for All” examines the current state of racial and ethnic health care disparities in the U.S. and builds upon findings from the 2003 “Unequal Treatment” report. The 2024 “Ending Unequal Treatment” report:
- Highlights the major drivers of health care disparities.
- Provides insight into successful and unsuccessful interventions.
- Identifies gaps in the evidence base.
- Proposes strategies to close those gaps.
- Considers ways to scale and spread effective interventions to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in health care with recommendations to advance health equity.
