Community Approaches to Counter Hate: Introducing HEART Resources

One year ago, SAMHSA’s OBHE partnered with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans (AA), Native Hawaiians (NH), and Pacific Islanders (PI) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to host the first White House Summit for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Mental Health. This landmark event led to the formation of a public-private collaborative dedicated to addressing the increase in hate incidents targeting AA, NH, and PI communities. This webinar celebrates the upcoming launch of the Healing, Empowerment, Awareness, and Resilience Toolbox (HEART) with resources to counter hate. Presenters will discuss three approaches from the Toolbox, designed to uplift mental health and strengthen community:

Racial Trauma Healing Circles
Family-Friendly Media Videos on How to Talk About Hate
Advocacy for Strengths-Based Prevention and Early Intervention Programming

These interventions and strategies can be adapted to support other diverse communities affected by hate.

Deputy Director
National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA)

Krystle Canare (she/her) is a proud Filipina American; the eldest daughter of first generation immigrant parents; the descendent of Filipino farmers, fisherman, and warriors; and carries both their generational wounds and legacy as a person with lived mental health experience and as a Deputy Director of National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA), a national organization dedicated to promoting and redefining the mental health of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders across the United States.  

Prior to NAAPIMHA, Krystle served as consultant for the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, an ambassador for the White House Initiative on Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders, steering committee member for the National Network to Eliminate Disparities in Behavioral Health, health equity ambassador for the American Psychological Association, staff at the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and National Alliance on Mental Illness, and Vice Chair of the Asian Mental Health Collective.  Krystle enjoys living as a digital nomad and way finder traveling the country, reconnecting with the land, and living full-time in her RV with her partner and puppy, Evie.

Dr. Anne Saw

Associate Professor of Psychology & Affiliated Faculty with Global Asian Studies Program
DePaul University

Dr. Anne Saw (she/her) is an associate professor of psychology and affiliated faculty with Global Asian Studies program at DePaul University in Chicago and past vice president of the Asian American Psychological Association.  For over 20 years, she has worked with Asian/Asian American serving community-based organizations on research, program development, evaluation, training, and consultation.

Dr. Anne Saw will present on the Healing Our People through Engagement (HOPE) Program — a community-based, cultural tailored program spearheaded by AAPI Equity Alliance developed by Dr. Saw, along with Drs. Grace Chen and Sherry Wang, to promote radical healing from racism in Asian American communities.

Dr. Doris F. Chang

Associate Professor, New York University Silver School of Social Work
Co-Investigator, Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence, New York State Psychiatric Institute

Dr. Chang completed her doctoral training at UCLA and a National Institutes of Mental Health postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School. Her research seeks to advance the well-being of BIPOC communities by understanding the processes that impact psychological health, identifying strategies for improving intergroup relationships, and developing culturally-grounded interventions that integrate mindfulness and other contemplative traditions. She is author of the forthcoming volume, Transforming Careers in Mental Health for BIPOC: Strategies for Healing and Social Change (Routledge). Her recent work examines Asian and Black Americans’ experiences of discrimination in the Covid-19 pandemic and the role of critical consciousness and cross-racial allyship in promoting more resilient coping. Her research has been profiled on ABC News, CNN, 20/20, NPR, and the New York Times.

A passionate advocate for racial equity across education, health, and corporate settings, Dr. Chang has also been recognized for her work in promoting antiracist and anti-oppressive institutional practices. She regularly provides training, workshops, and consultation to schools, health care settings, and law firms on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is on the editorial boards of Psychotherapy Research, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and Frontiers in Psychology (Cultural Psychology section). Dr. Chang is a Fellow of the Mind and Life Institute, the Asian American Psychological Association, and the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Psychology Study of Culture, Ethnicity and Race. She maintains a private practice in New York City through Soho CBT + Mindfulness Center and is co-founder and Chief Clinical Officer of Unmute, a BIPOC-oriented healthtech company.

Natalie Tuālemoso Ah Soon, MPH

Director, Community Engagement & Government Relations
RAMS, Inc.

Natalie Tuālemoso Ah Soon has most recently transitioned from her role as the Director of Population-Focused Programs into the Director of Community Engagement & Government Relations. She came to RAMS in 2014 and her journey here is unique. Her roles and programs are many firsts at RAMS and for Pacific Islander and Asian communities in the SF Bay Area. She directs two mental health prevention and early intervention programs in San Francisco County (2014) and Alameda County (2018). Both programs are in direct partnership with long-standing, trusted community-based organizations. In 2018, RAMS expanded its reach and services for the first time to Alameda County to replicate the community mental health promotion and prevention model of service, focusing on Pacific Islanders. Their efforts include the: Samoan Wellness Initiative anchored at Samoan Community Development Center; Filipino Mental Health Initiative-SF with the Filipino-American Development Fund/Bayanihan Community Center; Southeast Asian Mental Health Initiative-SF; and the Pacific Islander Wellness Initiative anchored by Taulama, Regional Pacific Islander Taskforce, and Samoa Community Development Center.

Outside of her work at RAMS, Inc., Natalie is a co-founder and co-chair of the Regional Pacific Islander Taskforce in the Bay Area. This movement emerged out of a shared interest/passion to increase the visibility of Pacific Islander health needs and highlight their assets/strengths to address health and social disparities. Natalie holds a Master of Public Health from San Jose State University and is a proud San Francisco State University alumna where she honed her passion for public health. Outside of clock-work and heart-work, she is a nurturing and protective mother and grandmother, charming spouse, caring sister, and cool aunty. She is a proud native of American Samoa and fluent in Samoan.
