LGBTQ+ adults are twice as likely as non-LGBTQ+ adults to report negative experiences while receiving health care, according to recently released findings from The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), a non-partisan organization focused on health policy.
KFF’s findings underscore the challenges that queer people face in medical settings, including the higher rates of discrimination reported by young, poorer, and female LGBTQ+ people. The findings also highlight the steps that medical institutions, healthcare providers, and legislators can take to address LGBTQ+ discrimination and access to care.
The study found that 61% of LGBTQ+ adults reported negative experiences while receiving health care in the last three years, compared to 31% of non-LGBTQ+ adults. These negative experiences included a provider making personal assumptions without asking, personally blaming patients for their health problems, ignoring direct questions or requests, or refusing to prescribe necessary pain medication.
