Description:

This training program is designed to present a detailed account of how to culturally adapt an evidence-based practice for Hispanics in an outpatient mental health setting. A model for culturally adapting cognitive behavioral therapy at the administrative, service delivery and clinical levels will be provided. Practitioners will learn how to provide cognitive behavioral therapy using a 10-session structured protocol that has been culturally adapted to provide culturally competent mental health services to Hispanics.

Audience:

Organizational teams (up to 5) of clinicians (ideally bilingual English/Spanish but not mandatory), program managers, and administrators. Preference will be given to teams that include representatives from two or more of these categories.

Follow-up Activities:

Participants will check in and provide an update of the implementation of program.  Participants will discuss strategies that have worked and barriers to implementing the program.  Trainers will help participants brain-storm strategies for overcoming barriers to program implementation.

Discussion forum – participants will conduct case presentations and discuss what cultural adaptations they have used and what the outcome has been.

Coaching session – A refresher in CBT will be provided.  Participants will be asked to present challenges in providing a 10-session structured protocol.  Participants will be asked to conduct cultural competency assessment on their organization once again to present during the last discussion forum.

Discussion forum – Results of cultural competency assessments will be presented by participants.  Next steps will be discussed.

Outcomes:

Participants will learn:

  • The importance of considering culture in providing mental health services to Hispanics
  • Gain the skills needed to culturally adapt an evidenced-based practice
  • Learn a 10-session structured protocol of culturally adapted cognitive behavioral therapy
  • How to develop a cultural adaptation plan specific to their organization
