NNED PARTNER of the MONTH:

This month the NNED has  selected Island Girl Power Guam (IGP). Based in Dedo, Guam IGP was originally founded in 2002 by the Ayuda Foundation to address the increasingly high rates of teen pregnancy, suicide, substance abuse and sexual abuse in Guam by offering a safe outlet for girls between the ages of 7 to 14. IGP is a place where girls can develop their own personal interests and aspirations in a safe place.

How to Get SBIRT Paid For: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration initiative that screens for and identifies individuals with or at-risk for substance use-related problems within community health centers that serve diverse populations, is now getting reimbursed in the nine Federally Qualified Health Centers in the NNED SBIRT Learning Cluster. Behavioral Health Care Reform: The Advocacy and Community Engagement Learning Cluster sent a letter to the House and Senate on February 18, 2010.  To read the letter and learn about their priorities for behavioral health care reform click here.
 
African American Mental Health Campaign Launched: With the support of the NNED, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has released a national public service campaign designed to raise awareness of mental health problems among young adults in the African American community. What's New in Behavioral Health Care
 
National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: March 20th is National Native (American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian) HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. On this day communities across the country work to raise awareness about the rates of HIV infection within the American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. Public Health’s Role in Mental Health Disparities: Racial and ethnic minority populations are underserved in the U.S. mental health care system, and treatment disparities between whites and African Americans have increased substantially since the 1990s, according to an article in the January issue of Preventing Chronic Disease. Ludacris & Jamie Foxx Break the Silence on HIV: The Centers for Disease Control has launched a new social media campaign aimed at educating black youth about HIV. The "i know" campaign aims to draw thousands of young people into a conversation about HIV using Facebook, Twitter, and text messages through the iKnow website, featuring messages from Jamie Foxx and Ludacris. Bans on Same-Sex Marriage May Affect Mental Health: A new study out of the Journal of Public Health shows that gay, lesbian, and bisexual people living in states with institutional discrimination - such as bans on same-sex marriage - are at increased risk of psychiatric disorders. HHS Announces 2010 Tribal Consultation Blueprint: In compliance with Obama's memorandum on Tribal consultation, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has released a blueprint for continuing to improve tribal consultation efforts so that policies that have tribal implications receive meaningful and timely input by Tribal officials. Family Centered Substance Abuse Treatment Grants for Adolescents and their Families: SAMHSA program to provide substance abuse services to adolescents and their families. Applications are due April 23, 2010.
 
Grants to Expand Substance Abuse Treatment in Targeted Areas of Need - Technology Assisted Care: SAMHSA program to enhance the capacity of substance abuse treatment providers to serve clients through the use of innovative and cost-effective technology. Applications are due April 27, 2010. 
 
Mental Health Transformation Grant: SAMHSA program to foster the adoption of changes in the delivery of public mental health services so that they are consumer-driven, recovery-oriented and evidence-based.  Applications are due April 30, 2010.
 
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Local Funding Partnerships: This RWJF program forges relationships between RWJF and local grantmakers to fund promising, original projects that can significantly improve the health of vulnerable populations. Brief proposals are due June 30, 2010.

Data Collection and Reporting on Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Health: The Asian and Pacific Islander Health Forum has released the recommendations from their conference Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Health Brain Trust on Data & Research held in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 14-16, 2009. The document was developed in response to the urgent need for more baseline data and evidence-based research on the health and healthcare issues of the NHPI population. NAMI Mental Health Toolkit Focuses on Black Congregations: In 2008 the National Alliance on Mental Illness launched a toolkit to assist organizations in reaching out to and partnering with African American congregations. Data shows that the toolkit increases understanding of mental illness and encourages a greater sense empathy and desire to be supportive of individuals who live with mental illness. Social Determinants of Health DVD Available in Asian Languages: The documentary series entitled Unnatural Causes aimed at tackling the root causes of our alarming socio-economic and racial inequities in health is now available on DVD in various Asian languages.  For more information click here.
 
New Documentary on Coping with Urban Trauma: This 50-minute documentary illustrates some of the emotional trauma that underserved populations in urban areas experience in their daily lives, along with its impact on their mental wellness.  For more information click here.
 
HIV/AIDS Prevention Bilingual Glossary: The Office of Minority Health has developed a bilingual Spanish/English glossary of terms commonly included in public health HIV/AIDS prevention.  For more information click here.
 
How Healthy Is Your County?: The new County Health Rankings website gives public health and community leaders a simple way to measure the health of every county in every state in the nation, so they can see how well they are doing and where they need to improve. For more information click here.
