NNED Highlights

NNED Launches New Home Page:  The new www.nned.net home page features a fresh, dynamic  look and feel with a carousel design to show case "Recent News" items. New items are posted almost daily to keep the website current. The redesign also includes links to partner with the NNED through social networking sites.

NNED Partner of the Month: Every month on the home page the NNED will be featuring a NNED Partner organization in order to highlight pockets of excellence.  This month the Bienvenido program at the Northeastern Center in Indiana has been selected.  To learn more about the Bienvenido program visit the NNED home page at http://www.nned.net.
 

NNED Network in Action Forum Calls: The October call will highlight preliminary findings of the Community Defined Evidence Project (CDEP), a joint partnership with the National Latino Behavioral Health Association (NLBHA) and the NNED.  The call will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15th from 3:00-4:30pm ET.  A separate invitation to register for the call will be sent to NNED partners and affiliates.

White House Launches Fatherhood Initiative: NPR (8/11) reported on the recent launch of the national fatherhood tour by the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnership which will "go around the country holding town hall meetings to discuss the importance of fatherhood and speak with community organizations about what policies best work to build strong families."  For more information click here.
 
President Obama Announces HIV/AIDS Community Discussions: President Obama has announced the launch of the National HIV/AIDS Community Discussions, a series of events hosted by the White House Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP).  These events will offer the public a chance to provide input on a National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS). Community Health Workers Improve Outcomes for the Underserved: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released a report that found that Community Health Workers can serve as a means of improving outcomes for underserved populations for some health conditions.  For more information click here.
 
Asian American Women at Risk for Suicide: Although Asian-Americans as a group have lower rates of thinking about and attempting suicide than the national average, U.S.-born Asian-American women seem to be particularly at risk for suicidal behavior, according to new University of Washington research.  For more information click here.
 
SBI Codes Can Work in Community Hospitals: Screening and brief intervention (SBI) for alcohol and other drug problems can be effectively implemented in community hospitals if certain barriers are addressed and overcome, according to researchers at Rhode Island Hospital.  For more information click here.

Learning Clusters

Community Advocacy and Engagement: This NNED Learning Cluster had a consensus meeting in August and has developed a work plan focused upon including behavioral health care in general health care reform.  Additionally, the group is working to develop a Community Bill of Rights that focuses on issues related to behavioral health.  
 
SBIRT: The NNED recently launched a Learning Cluster focusing upon the implementation of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT).  This group plans to implement SBIRT in their local communities and develop ways to make this intervention financially plausible for community health center.

September 22 -- Public Health Services and Systems Research: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) seeks to engage new researchers in the field of public health services and systems research.

September 29 -- American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 - Pathways Out of Poverty: The Department of Labor (DOL) announces the availability of grant funds for projects that provide training and placement services to provide pathways out of poverty and into employment within the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. 
 
October 14 -- Rethinking Mental Health: Ashoka's Changemakers, in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is seeking submissions for their Rethinking Mental Health: Improving Community Wellbeing collaborative competition. The competition will provide three winners with awards of $5,000 to further their initiative.

October 16 -- Outpatient Early Intervention Services with Respect to HIV: The purpose of this funding is to provide, on an ongoing outpatient basis, high quality early intervention services/primary care to individuals with HIV infection. 

October 21 -- Collaborative Minority Alcohol Research Center Development: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) invites applications for linked awards to assist researchers and faculty at Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) establish collaborative partnerships.

First Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnership Initiative TA Conference: The FBPI is holding technical assistance and training meetings across the country for faith-based and community groups.  The first meeting is taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 22-24, 2009.  For more information click here.

Latino Behavioral Health Institute Annual Conference:  The LBHI Conference offers learning opportunities and networking for researchers, academicians, consumers, family members and practitioners in Latino Behavioral Health.  The conference takes place in Los Angeles, California on September 23-25, 2009.  For more information click here.
 
RFI Cultural Competency Training Curriculum: The Hogg Foundation has released a Request for Information for cultural competency training curricula.  The foundation seeks information about cultural competency training programs for mental health service providers.  Proposals are due September 30, 2009.  For more information click here.
 
Multiethnic Advocates for Cultural Competency Conference: This conference entitled “New Shores: Health and Social Service Messages for Emerging Populations” offers two tracks, one for the emerging Somali community and one for health, behavioral heath, social service, education and other care providers.  The conference takes place in Columbus, Ohio on October 1-2, 2009.  For more information click here.
 
Children's Mental Health Research and Policy Conference, Call for Papers: The 23rd Annual Children’s Mental Health Research & Policy Conference out of the Research and Training Center for Children's Mental Health is looking for presenters at their conference in Tampa, Florida on March 7-10, 2010.  Submissions must be submitted by October 31, 2009.  For more information click here.

Standardization of Patient Race, Ethnicity and Language Data: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has released a report suggesting that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) develop national standards for collecting data on patient race, ethnicity and primary language to better understand and address care quality disparities.  For more information click here.

National Survey of Drug Use and Health Report on Race/Ethnicity: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recently released a short report from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) that focuses upon racial and ethnic minorities.  For more information click here.

Procedural Guidance on HIV/AIDS Prevention & Care: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed a guide for community-based-organizations (CBOs) to increase the number of persons living with HIV who know that they are infected and to give them and persons at high risk for HIV infection the best tools available for staying healthy and reducing the chance of giving HIV to others.  For more information click here.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Substance Abuse: The Substance Abuse Policy Research Program recently released a policy brief on the 2002 Institute of Medicine publication Unequal Treatment (Smedley et al, 2002) that found that minorities in the United States generally receive inferior health care and have worse health outcomes than Caucasians.  For more information click here.

Vulnerable Youth and the Transition to Adulthood: The Urban Institute has released a collection of new research that examines youth vulnerability and risk-taking behaviors on several outcomes for young adults has released a collection of new research that explores the sometimes rough road to adulthood. Characteristics of Children of Immigrants: In tandem with their Children of Immigrants Data Tool, the Urban Institute has released a publication, entitled Children of Immigrants: National and State Characteristics , that describes the national and state characteristics of children of immigrants based on recent American Community Survey data.  For more information click here.

Resource Guide on Supporting GLBTQI Individuals with Mental Illness: NAMI and Upenn Collaborative on Community Integration have released two new resource guides on supporting GLBTQI individuals with mental illness.  For more information click here.
