the Whitehouse, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius and White House Health Czar Nancy Ann DeParle held a
discussion concerning minority health issues. At this discussion
Secretary Sebelius released a new report on health disparities in

Media Campaign to Mobilize Black Americans Around AIDS: Leading U.S. media companies have announced a new coordinated national campaign to mobilize Black Americans in response to AIDS and promote specific calls-to-action to prevent and reduce the further spread of HIV. Greater Than AIDS seeks to strengthen a sense of community among Black Americans in response to HIV/AIDS. For more information click here . Behavioral Health in Health Care Reform: In late May the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released a consensus statement about health care reform and the importance of behavioral health within reform. Web-based Game Helps Teens Manage HIV: A web-based game could help educate teenagers with HIV infection on how to avoid transmitting the virus, a pilot study suggests. The web-based game, dubbed +CLICK (positive Click), allows users to virtually navigate through a shopping mall that features lessons on abstinence, condom use and contraception, as well as video clips of other young people with HIV sharing their advice and experiences. Learning Clusters Community Defined Evidence Project: The CDEP Project has completed data collection with 16 organizations and conducted a preliminary review of interview to prepare a brief monograph with an inventory of culturally-based behavioral health practices that successfully serve Latino/Hispanic populations in the United States. The summaries presented in the monograph compile information gathered through the interviews, as well as reviews of documents for each of the CDEP Study Sites. Through additional support from SAMHSA all of the recorded interviews (approximately 250, in English and in Spanish) will be transcribed and translated for further data analysis. Community Advocacy and Engagement: This NNED Learning Cluster will focus on the identification of effective advocacy strategies for behavioral health issues in communities of color. Local groups have been identified and will participate in a Consensus meeting in August, 2009. For more information visit the Learning Clusters page on the NNED website. Funding Opportunities July 20 -- Curbing HIV/AIDS Transmission Among High Risk Minority Youth and Adolescents (CHAT) by Utilizing a Peer-to-Peer Outreach Model and New Application Technologies: The CHAT Program is intended to ascertain the effectiveness of collaborative community-based interventions, implemented at the grassroots level, on reducing health disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the collaborative partnership approach in supporting ongoing HIV/AIDS prevention/education and testing initiatives aimed at at-risk youth. For more information click here . August 3 -- Support Systems for Rural Homeless Youth - A Collaborative State and Local Demonstration: The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) is accepting
applications for a five-year Demonstration project targeted to young
people ages 16-21, in rural areas (including Tribal lands and other
rural Native communities) who are approaching independence and young
adulthood, but have few or no connections to a supportive, family

August 6 -- CHIPRA Outreach and Enrollment Grants Cycle I: On February 4, 2009 the President signed into law the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA). CHIPRA includes a number of provisions increasing outreach funding and activities to enroll eligible, but uninsured children, in coverage with a particular focus on those who are the most difficult to reach. September 1 -- Maternal and Child Health Research Program: The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) is awarding grants to support applied research relating to maternal and child health services. Research proposals should address critical Maternal and Child Health (MCH) questions such as public health systems and infrastructure, health disparities, quality of care, and promoting the health of MCH populations. Calendar Items Cultural and Linguistic Competence Community of Practice Meeting: Come and join the Technical Assistance Partnership for Child and Family Mental Health on Tuesday, July 28 for their Cultural and Linguistic Competence Community of Practice Meeting from 12 pm to 5 pm at the Hilton Hotel in Anaheim California, the day before their National System of Care Meeting. Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program Conference: The Refugee Resettlement Program State Conference on August 17 in Tucson, Arizona is an exciting opportunity for refugees, refugee service organizations and members of the general public to learn and share about the changing dynamics of refugee resettlement, and best practices that are helping refugees to successfully transition to life in Arizona. Resources Issue Brief on Supporting Immigrant and Refugee Children at School: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) initiative, Caring Across Communities, has released a new issue brief describing the impact of the immigrant and refugee experience on children and youth and the importance of engaging the entire family in addressing the mental health issues that may affect some of these children. For more information click here . Interactive U.S. Atlas of HIV/AIDS: The Minority Quality Forum has created an online interactive atlas of the U.S. HIV/AIDS epidemic. This HIV/AIDS atlas maps disease incidence and prevalence, using zip-code-level data, enabling users to view and compare information graphically—nationwide, by state, by congressional district, and by state legislative district. Experiences with HIV Testing Among African Americans: In response to National HIV Testing Day on June 27th the Kaiser Family Foundation released new and updated informational resources on HIV testing, including a survey brief that examines African Americans' reported views and experiences with HIV testing. DVD Release - Mental Health A Guide for Latinos and their Families: In May the American Psychological Association (APA) released a new DVD and guidebook on mental health for Latinos. The materials are in English and Spanish and single copies are available free. The materials are aimed at helping to inform the general Latino public about mental health, to dispel common misperceptions, and to reduce the stigma of mental illness among Latinos. Cross-Systems Financing Project for Vulnerable Populations: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has released a report on their Cross-Systems Financing Project, an initiative focused on individuals with substance use disorders and/or mental health issues with complex, often unmet, needs.
