NNED Highlights Welcoming a New NNED Partner: The NNED would like to welcome the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare (NCCBH) as a NNED Partner. The National Council is a not-for-profit association representing 1,300 organizations that provide treatment and rehabilitation to help people recover from mental illnesses and addiction disorder. The National Council offers state-of-the-science education and practice improvement resources that other NNED Partners will now have access to. Look for NCCBH webinars on the NNED calendar! NNED Network in Action Forum Calls: On October 15th the NNED held a Forum Call focused on preliminary findings from the Community Defined Evidence Project Learning Cluster. Future webinars will focus on how community-based organizations can more effectively use social media and other technology, and serving Latino children and families affected by trauma.
What's New CDC Leader Discusses Studies on Black Women and HIV-Infection: With Dr. Kevin Fenton of the the
Centers for Disease Control National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral
Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, NPR explores the reasons behind the high rates
of HIV/AIDS infection among black women. For more information click here. Nursing Home Mental Health Care Reform: Advocates in Illinois continue to push for a major overhaul of how
Illinois handles its elderly psychiatric patients. More than any other
state, Illinois relies on nursing homes to house the mentally ill and
advocates argue that patients could be treated more effectively and at
a lower cost in a community setting. For more information click here. November is American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month: On October 30, 2009 President Obama declared the observance of November
as National Native American and Alaska Native Heritage Month. In his
Proclomation the President addressed some of the issues that are facing

Proclomation click here. Kaiser Family Foundation and Univision Launch HIV/AIDS Campaign: In October Univision Communications Inc. and the Kaiser Family
Foundation unveiled the second phase of "SOY..." (I AM...), the
groundbreaking Spanish-language media campaign featuring the personal
stories of a diverse group of Latinos living with HIV and their loved
ones. For more information click here. Health IT Could Reduce Care Disparities: Speaking
at a recent conference as part of National Health IT week, Garth
Graham, M.D., deputy assistant for the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services' Office of Minority Health, suggested that telemedicine
and other health information technology (IT) tools could be leveraged
to reduce racial and ethnic care disparities. For more information click here. For more news click here . Learning Clusters Advocacy and Community Engagement: This NNED Learning Cluster worked on a health care reform letter with the National Alliance of Multiethnic Behavioral Health Association (NAMBHA) to ensure that behavioral health has a strong presence in health care reform. The Cluster is now in the process of selecting Knowledge Discovery and Diffusion Center(s) (KDC) to help support their work on a Bill of Rights and a strategy for involving youth and others in advocacy efforts. Faith-based Learning Cluster: The NNED held a Consultative Kick-off Session for this Learning Cluster at the end of October. This Learning Cluster will work to build partnerships between faith based and healthcare organizations. Members have divided into workgroups focused on topic areas such as how to build innovative partnerships, and how to more effectively utilize and collect population data. Funding Opportunities December 1 - American Recovery Reinvestment Act of 2009 Communities Putting Prevention to Work: The purpose of this funding opportunity is to create healthier
communities through sustainable, proven, population-based approaches
such as broad-based policy, systems, organizational and environmental
changes in communities and schools. Applications are due December 1, 2009. December 8 - Child Mental Health Initiative (CMHI): SAMHSA is accepting applications for Cooperative Agreements for Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families. The purpose of this program is to support government organizations in developing integrated home and community-based services and supports for children and youth with serious emotional disturbances and their families by encouraging the development and expansion of effective and enduring systems of care. Applications are due December 8, 2009. December 11 - Building Sustainable Community-Linked Infrastructure to Enable Health Science Research: This National Institutes of Health (NIH) Funding Opportunity Announcement solicits applications from institutions/organizations proposing to support the development, expansion, or reconfiguration of infrastructures needed to facilitate collaboration between academic health centers and community-based organizations for health science research. Calendar Items World AIDS Day Federal Conference Call: AIDS.gov
is hosting a World AIDS Day Conference Call for Federal staff and
grantees. The call will provide a brief update on the state of the
HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. and a brief overview of the global
epidemic. Participants will have a chance to ask select representatives
about Federal HIV/AIDS programs. The call is on November 17, 2009 from
2:30-4:00pm ET. For more information click here. National Federation of Families 20th Anniversary Conference: This
conference is a celebration of family involvement, expansion of the
Federation of Families and two decades of committed individuals,
families, and communities. The title of the conference is - Children's
Mental Health Matters: Families at the Forefront of Promoting Positive
Mental Health From Birth to Adulthood. The conference takes place
December 3 - 6, 2009(Pre-Conference Day on December 3rd) in Washington
D.C. For more information click here. USF Behavioral Health Conference Call for Abstracts: The University of South Florida Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health
Institute is holding a conference on April 13-14, 2010 to address the
gaps between research, practice and policy that significantly impair
the rapidity of progress for improving health care quality. Individual
paper, poster, think tank and symposia abstracts are being solicited.

November 2009 supplement to Pediatrics examines health-disparity and
health-literacy issues, problems, and opportunities specific to
children and children's health. Contents include nine articles and
discussant comments on conceptualizing child health disparities and

has released their most recent e-Newsletter. This issue provides,
recommendations, resources and tools that community-based organizations
can utilize to prepare their diverse communities for the flu season and
H1N1. For more information click here. Workforce Development Resource - Employers, Young-Adults and Postsecondary Credentials:
The Workforce Strategy Center has released a report entitled Employers,
Low-Income Young Adults, and Postsecondary Credentials: A Practical
Typology for Business, Education, and Community Leaders that
investigates a number of education and training programs involving
employers in efforts to help disadvantaged young adults attain
post-secondary credentials leading to career track employment. For more information click here. New Demographic Profiles of U.S. Hispanics By Country of Origin: The
Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, released
five demographic profiles of Hispanic populations in the United States
by country of origin: Guatemalan, Colombian, Honduran, Ecuadorian and
Peruvian. Each profile describes the demographic, employment and
income characteristics of each group. For more information click here. Brief on American Indians and Alaska Natives and Health Coverage: The
Kaiser Family Foundation has released a brief that examines the health
coverage, access to care and health status of American Indians and
Alaska Natives across the country. The brief gives an overview of the
some of the demographic factors that influence the health and insurance
