Guidelines for Primary Care of Patients with HIV (posted 8/28)Posted: August 28, 2009
The HIV Medicine Association and the Infectious Diseases Society of
America have issued new primary care guidelines for the management of
patients with HIV, MedPage Today reports. Published in Clinical Infectious Diseases ,
the guidelines—last updated in 2004—address HIV infection transmission,
HIV diagnosis, risk screening, disease management and adherence to care
plans. Among the changes, the guidelines increase the list of
recommended diagnostic tests and suggest applying the medical home
model approach to address the complex medical needs of patients with

Although Asian-Americans as a group have lower rates of thinking about and attempting suicide than the national average, U.S.-born Asian-American women seem to be particularly at risk for suicidal behavior, according to new University of Washington research. The study shows 15.93 percent of U.S.-born Asian-American women have contemplated suicide in their lifetime, exceeding national estimates of 13.5 percent for all Americans. The finding comes in a study published in the current issue of the journal Archives of Suicide Research . Click here for more information. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released a report analyzing the role of Community Health Workers (CHWs). The report entitled Outcomes of Community Health Worker Interventions found that CHWs can serve as a means of improving outcomes for underserved populations for some health conditions. However, the effectiveness of CHWs requires further research that addresses the methodological limitations of prior studies and that contributes to translating research into practice. The CDC has developed a map that shows state-by-state where CDC funds have been allocated to address issues related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Funding includes prevention programs,
research and evaluation efforts,
surveillance activities, and policy
development. In sharing with
community members and stakeholders the CDC's
annual HIV prevention budget, CDC hopes to
increase accountability and demonstrate
