Presentation on Cultural Competence and the Elimination of Disparities (posted 7/18)

To learn more about disparities in mental health care and the need for culturally and linguistically competent care, view these presentation slides from Dr. Larke Huang's presentation at the Georgetown University Cultural and Linguistic Competence Pre-Institute training session.  Dr. Huang, Ph.D., Office of the Administrator, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provided an overview of the emerging data on disparities in health care, and specifically in behavioral health, and pointed to some current opportunities that communities can engage in to help eliminate these disparities.  Utilizing a Social Determinants of Health framework, Dr. Huang pointed to the importance of data collection. Additionally, Dr. Huang provided an overview of the opportunities to eliminate disparities present in Health Care reform and discussed several Health and Human Service Administration initiatives, including the Health Disparities Council, to address disparities in behavioral health care.
