NNED Partner of the MonthPosted: September 08, 2009
In order to highlight pockets of excellence across the country the NNED selects an organization to highlight once a month. In honor of Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month this July the NNED has selected Healthy Drumming as the Partner of the Month. Healthy Drumming® is a holistic approach designed to decrease stress and anxiety by activating and bridging physiological, psychological, and spiritual schemas. The procedure is based on sound traditional healing techniques, scientific applications, and psychological strategies. The journey within is intended to induce an awakened and reflective state of consciousness and assist individuals to learn more about themselves in a joyful manner. A Healthy Drumming® workshop includes playing basic rhythmical patterns on a drum, vocalizations, breathing exercises, meditation, and verbal and non-verbal communication. Healthy Drumming circles are led by Dr. Sal Nunez, who will be presenting on this innovative program during the NNED's Network in Action Forum Call on July 7th at 3pm ET highlighting the ways that communities across the country are celebrating Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Month. CDC Releases Procedural Guidance on HIV/AIDS Prevention & Care (posted 9/2)Posted: September 02, 2009
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed a guide for community-based-organizations (CBOs) to increase the number of persons living with HIV who know that they are infected and to give them and persons at high risk for HIV infection the best tools available for staying healthy and reducing the chance of giving HIV to others. These guidelines were developed within the framework of CDC's 2003 initiative, Advancing HIV Prevention: New Strategies for a Changing Epidemic (AHP). This Procedural Guidance document gives information to help CBOs come up with a plan for delivering interventions. It will help organizations design prevention programs and recruitment strategies to promote counseling and testing, health education and risk reduction, and other prevention services; counseling, testing, and referral strategies; and interventions to help prevent the spread of HIV to meet the needs of persons living with HIV, their partners, and other persons who are not HIV infected but are at very high risk for HIV. Click here to download the document from the CDC website. The Procedural Guidance document does not give all of the information organizations will need to design, deliver, and monitor the interventions suggested in the guidelines. CDC will help organizations with more training and technical assistance. Information about the interventions is available at Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) . The Hogg Foundation has released an RFI for cultural competency training curricula. The foundation seeks information about cultural competency training
programs for mental health service providers. This request for
information (RFI) provides an opportunity for prospective respondents
to submit information and recommend ideas for designing, developing and
implementing a cultural competency training program for service
providers in Texas. Specifically,
the foundation seeks information about curricula, materials and costs
associated with cultural competency training, including manualized
evidence-based and non-evidence-based curricula and curricula with the
potential to be manualized. If available, the respondent should provide
evidence of the program’s effectiveness in increasing providers’
cultural competency. Submissions are due by September 30, 2009 at 1:00pm CDT . Click here for more information. Vulnerable Youth and the Transition to Adulthood (posted 9/1)Posted: September 01, 2009
The Urban Institute has released a collection of new research that explores the sometimes rough road to adulthood. This series entitled Vulnerable Youth and the Transition to Adulthood examines youth vulnerability and risk-taking behaviors on
several outcomes for young adults, using the National Longitudinal
Survey of Youth, 1997 cohort. Notable results suggest youth follow one
of four patterns in connecting to the labor market and school in the
transition to adulthood: consistently-connected, later-connected,
initially-connected, or never-connected. Second generation Latinos make
a fairly smooth transition to young adulthood, but are less likely to
engage in post-secondary schooling than whites. Youth from low-income
families, distressed neighborhoods, and youth with poor mental health
engage in relatively high levels of some adolescent risk behaviors and
have relatively lower earnings and levels of connectedness in early
adulthood. To read the research articles click here . |
