Best Practices in Training Service Providers in Transition Competencies

Friday, February 23, 2018 | 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM ET

In this webinar, the Pathways Transition Training Partnership team, Pauline Jivanjee, Eileen Brennan and Leigh Grover, will discuss research-based best practices for improving training for transition service providers. They will describe the development and content of Promoting Positive Pathways to Adulthood, a series of ten online training modules and a toolkit of practice exercises based on core competencies for effective practice with young people in the transition years who have mental health needs. They will also share findings of a study of training outcomes for two groups of service provider teams, where teams in one group received online training only and those in the other group received online training and also participated in team-based exercises to apply learning from each module to practice.

Jammie Farish of Youth MOVE Oregon and Damie Jackson-Diop of North Carolina Mental Health Planning Council, two leaders of teams that participated in the study will share their experiences of facilitating team-based learning, the challenges of engaging busy team members in training, and outcomes of the training process.

Results of a review of studies of effective training strategies and findings of Supporting You in Supporting Youth, a recent PTTP/Youth MOVE National-sponsored national survey of transition service providers' training needs and preferences will also be presented.

The webinar will conclude with a discussion of the implications of this research for future training initiatives and potential alternative training formats to enhance service providers' competencies.
